Is an apprenticeship right for me?

Higher Level and Degree apprenticeships are a great option for people of any age, not just school leavers and young people: there is no upper age limit, and as long as you're over 18, then you could benefit from this opportunity to learn and earn, taking an undergraduate degree or postgraduate degree alongside a full-time job.

Our apprenticeship programmes are designed to be studied whilst working, to help you progress academically and professionally in your programme of study and in your career. On all of our apprenticeship programmes, you will benefit from a workplace mentor and a university personal tutor, who will work together to monitor your progress regularly.

Every individual is different, but someone who is well organised, hardworking, resilient, able to work in a team and conduct themselves as a confident individual stands a great chance of being successful as an apprentice. Your programme will not just provide an academic education, but help you develop as an individual.

What does it cost?

More good news! If you're studying an apprenticeship at the University of Cumbria, you do not have to pay any tuition fees. Your employer and the government pay university fees.

You will probably need access to your own computer to make progress with your studies. In addition, you will need to travel to campus, and may need to cover the cost of this yourself: please discuss this with your employer to understand whether they will contribute to this cost.

What will I be paid?

Whether you are working with the employer already or join them in a role linked to the apprenticeship training, your salary will be set by your employer and be in line with the sector, role and geography. You will be paid as a full-time employee throughout the programme, which includes the mandatory training, whether it is with us on campus or in the workplace.

Your substantive employment contract will set out your entitlement to annual leave, and approach to bank holidays. Time off work will be agreed with the employer as any other normal employee, however we would expect full attendance for university-led training. The pattern of apprenticeship learning will vary by programme, typical university vacation periods may not apply, and you should discuss the likely learning pattern in advance of making an application.

To support your application to a programme, we will ask you to complete an individual learner assessment, which helps us understand your skills, attributes and current levels of knowledge.  This is also a chance to understand where you might need additional support to make your higher level or degree apprenticeship a success.

It’s really rewarding and will help you with your day to day management skills. You need to be prepared to put in the effort and hours, but it is worth it for the sense of satisfaction and achievement you will experience.
